LEADER’S COLUMN: Great entertainment at Noise on the ‘Nal

With the summer break starting, it’s nice to see Cotswold Canals Connected continue their popular monthly events throughout the summer under a new name: Noise on the ‘Nal. Performances, entertainment and exhibitions take place in locations along the Stroudwater Canal on the last Sunday of each month. There was a brilliant selection of events last Sunday so keep your diary free for next Sunday, August 28th, more information at cotswoldcanalsconnected.org

It’s always good to see community initiatives moving forward. Last weekend the Coaley Community’s newly built village shop opened, an incredible effort by the village and volunteers. Supporting our local businesses is always one thing we can all do to keep our villages and towns alive in the evening. Come with me for the next one on August 20th! If we all spend £ 5 a week in our town or village it makes a real difference.

There is now further support for hospitality businesses affected by the pandemic. Stroud County Council administers £ 1 million additional grants that are open to a range of businesses including travel and tourism companies, event and wedding organizers, nightclubs, theaters and breweries, and professional and mobile businesses. We have also added additional support for taxis to reflect the importance of taxis in our rural area where public transport can be restricted. Please submit an application if you are eligible.

The application deadline is Sunday, August 8th, at 10 p.m. Eligible companies receive a one-off payment based on the number of successfully received applications. To apply, please visit stroud.gov.uk/business/business-rates
