Yahoo India has ceased content operations in India, citing new Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) regulations effective August 26th. The company has closed offerings including Yahoo News, Yahoo Cricket, Finance, Entertainment and MAKERS India starting Thursday. These websites will no longer be accessible in India. American technology company Verizon Media bought Yahoo in 2017.
The popular media company explained the reason for discontinuing its publication in the country: “The new FDI digital media regulations restrict foreign ownership of media companies operating and publishing news and current affairs digital content in India, which has an impact on the our products Yahoo Cricket, Finance, News, Entertainment and MAKERS India. “
Starting October 15, 2021, the digital news media are expected to comply with the 26 percent FDI in India. In November 2020, the Union’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry said that companies that have more than 26 percent of foreign direct investment will be required to seek government approval and also reduce foreign ownership to 26 percent by next year.
“We didn’t make this decision easy for ourselves. However, Yahoo India has been influenced by changes in regulatory laws in India that now restrict foreign ownership of media companies that operate and publish digital content in India, ”the company said in a message posted on a website.
However, this does not affect the users of their Yahoo Mail account and their email IDs. “This development has no impact on your Yahoo Mail account. Your email ID will remain unchanged, ”said the company. “Yahoo Mail will continue to work as usual in India. Click https://in.mail.yahoo.com to access your Yahoo Mail account, ”it added.
The Verizon-owned media group reiterated, saying, “Yahoo Mail is not subject to FDI digital media regulations and is therefore not affected by this change.”
Regarding the resumption of operations in India in the future, the media company said: “We have a long connection with India and remain open to opportunities that connect us with the users here.”
